Jerry's New Beginning
The Ongoing Journey of Rebuilding After Loss and Hardship
For Jerry, rebuilding his life did not begin with a single breakthrough. It began with a decision to keep going.
A Veteran who served in the U.S. Army, Jerry once owned his own business and was building a life for himself in Florida. But beginning around 2017, he entered what he describes as the most difficult chapter of his life.
Over the next several years, Jerry experienced profound family loss, struggled with severe medical issues and chronic pain, and battled PTSD related to his military service. Looking for a way to cope, he turned to drugs. His health continued to decline, leading to serious medical complications, including a coma.
The challenges did not stop there. Jerry eventually found himself incarcerated in Florida. When he was released, he made the decision to start over and relocate to New York. But starting over was not easy. Without stable housing or a support system, he found himself living in a local homeless shelter, unsure of what came next.
That is when he connected with Veterans One-stop Center.
Through VOSC's Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, Jerry was able to secure an apartment and begin rebuilding the foundation of his life. Staff worked alongside him to navigate many of the barriers that can make recovery feel overwhelming. We helped him secure employment, obtain important documents, address issues with his driver's license and bank account, pay essential bills, and access transportation through bus passes so he could stay connected to appointments and support services.
For many people, those tasks might seem routine. For someone trying to rebuild after years of hardship, they can be life-changing. With stable housing, employment, and support, Jerry began moving forward and focusing on creating a better future. Today, he describes himself as humble and grateful for the opportunities he has been given.
"The best therapy is to work," Jerry says.
That mindset continues to motivate him each day. He believes one of the most important lessons he has learned is to surround yourself with good people and focus on what is directly in front of you.
"One step at a time." It is a simple phrase, but for Jerry, it has become a way of life.
While his circumstances have improved, he is quick to point out that his story is far from over. Rebuilding a life after years of loss, addiction, health challenges, homelessness, and incarceration does not happen overnight. There are still goals he is working toward and challenges he continues to face.
But there is also progress.
As of June 2026, Jerry has secured employment and is currently completing job training as he prepares for the next chapter of his career. The life he is building today looks very different from the one he was living just a few years ago. Each day brings another opportunity to move forward, make healthy choices, and continue the work of rebuilding.
Looking back, Jerry does not hesitate when talking about the impact that support from VOSC and the VA has had on his life.
"I would've been dead without VOSC and the VA here," he said.
His story is not one of a finished journey. It is a story of resilience, second chances, and the courage to keep moving forward when the road ahead feels long. There is still work to do and goals he hopes to achieve, but the progress he has made is real. Today, Jerry is focused not on how far he still has to go, but on continuing to move forward - one step at a time.
